From Single-Parent Holiday Nightmare to Pet-Sitting Bliss: A Mother's Journey
After my relationship concluded, I naively believed vacations being a solo mother would be easy. I soon realized they were either extremely costly, otherwise seemed exclusively suitable for “traditional” families, or else were far too cheap that I returned back more exhausted than when I’d left.
Early Vacation Attempts
My first attempt, camping alongside companions, was fine up until I had to dismantle our shelter. Hours of wrestling with the tent under the sun afterward, I developed a dislike for camping. Next, an adventurous trip for solo-parent households. Rappelling and exploring caves were brilliant, but resting in a bunkbed wrecked my spine. We tried a budget package in Tenerife, but the crowds of traditional families felt intense, and pool-side chats with fellow women died down because I wasn’t come with a handy partner for their spouses to talk to. An excursion to Majorca with a friend and her children was brilliant, but the cost was eye-watering.
Discovering Pet-Sitting
Then, the previous fall, a friend inquired if we’d look after her dogs in Devon while she attended to a wedding. During a tranquil weekend, we walked along the shore, and settled near the fireplace at night. This prompted to house-sitting for her friend in the region, and it also went smoothly. Inspired, I subscribed with an annual £99 membership to join a house-sitting platform, where, in exchange for caring for people’s pets, you stay at their residences without cost. In just a couple of days, I’d arranged a ten-day pet-sit in Sussex, caring for a labrador named Buzz during the time the proprietors traveled overseas.
Our daily strolls gave us the opportunity to discover stunning natural settings.
This marked the initial assignment for strangers, but all anxiety dissipated as soon as we arrived the gorgeous four-bedroom home and encountered the calm Buzz, who lived for belly scratches. Our daily canine strolls offered us the possibility to explore stunning nature spots, and, once we came home, we could unwind outdoors for meaningful conversations about our preferred “Ghosts” personas in the television series. We avoided any pricey overrated attractions to traipse through – instead, we browsed bookstores, treated ourselves to nail care, and embarked on paddling excursions. I experienced lighter and happier than I had for a long time, and could feel the connection with my daughter Polly strengthen daily. I don’t afraid to admit that I cried from joy. Things felt achievable again.
Could Pet-Sitting for You?
Pet-sitting isn’t suitable for all. Certain individuals prefer zero duties on holiday apart from choosing their next beverage, are not into dogs or cats, or perhaps feel odd about staying in a stranger’s bedroom, emptying the dishwasher, and putting out the trash. But the soothing rhythm of ordinary living, with work removed and fresh locations to investigate, is perfect perfectly.
This prevents me from descending into complete idleness, a state that leaves me experience restless and oddly empty. Moreover, monetarily, pet-sitting acts as a lifeline for a solo mother. A 10-day break in a similar-sized property within the identical region we stayed could cost me back about £2,500 on Airbnb.
A New Outlook
As for staying in a stranger’s house, I found it enriching. Although house-sitting is a exchange, it’s also an act of faith among strangers and animals, that has brought out the finest version of me – my calm, loving and measured side, overflowing with gratitude for the people and places we encounter. I’ve already scheduled an additional short break away, looking after a whippet within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to attempt pet-sitting overseas. Thanks to a bit of creative planning, we can experience the world from the coziness of a home – it just happens to be someone else’s.
