Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

If Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the player and his mentor.
