Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
