Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Lineup to Face Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected call-up.
Performance Issues Result in Exclusion
Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI side after managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.
The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Team Updates
Recent performances suggest of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia look for a fix to their top-order woes.
Pace Additions and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
