Plans for Trump-Putin Talks Delayed Days Following Budapest Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

Recently the US president said he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting the president had pushed him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the war on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the sole subject that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The talk about the missiles had emerged as a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he commented.
