Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Ashes Team
England have chosen a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.
In those matches, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers is still the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
However McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents perform and excel out here.”
