United Nations Lifts Penalties on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting next week.

He was appointed interim leader following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that removed the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of civil war.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" following Assad's ouster.

He had been subject to UN sanctions in his role as head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations in July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and supportive states for their support the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Placeholder Trump and Sharaa meeting
After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

Both presidents held discussions initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through Arab nations.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be his initial visit to America this year. During September, he became the first Syrian leader to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

During his address, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
