Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Fan Response
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
