Woman Taken into Custody After Alleged Medical Gas Tampering at Multiple Sydney Hospitals

A female individual is now in police custody after medical gas supplies reportedly tampered with at a pair of Sydney-area hospitals.

Event Overview

The Sutherland medical facility in the city's southern suburbs lost critical gas supplies on Tuesday morning, forcing staff to transition to portable oxygen and air as an emergency measure, as stated by medical authorities.

"The cause of the loss to gas systems appears to be intentional interference," officials declared.

They further emphasized that "{To allegedly do this represents extreme recklessness. It could have been disastrous consequences."

Law Enforcement Response

Law enforcement said they received reports of "alleged vandalism at multiple medical facilities in Caringbah." Sources indicate that the second location was a local private medical center.

Authorities claim a female in her forties gained access of a medical facility on Kareena Road premises at approximately just after midnight on Tuesday morning and "cut both the water and gas mains, before activating emergency water systems."

Investigators additionally claim that at about 1:30 AM, "the suspect accessed the property of another hospital on Kareena Road ... and reportedly switched off the primary gas supply."

She was arrested in the Miranda area at about 4 AM on Tuesday for violating bail conditions, police confirmed.

Hospital Response

Health officials confirmed that gas systems were returned to operation by hospital teams and regional health authorities "within approximately two hours."

"Let me reassure the community there was no impact to medical services and that the facility has resumed normal operations as per normal," authorities announced.

They added that "Entry to gas systems in public medical facilities is restricted. We will review the incident to identify potential enhancements can be put in place."

Authorities disclosed that the suspect allegedly scaled a wall at the medical facility and gained access to a restricted area.
